L-theanine (γ-glutamylethylamide) is a unique non-protein amino acid found in green tea (Camellia sinensis), which is the second most consumed beverage in theworld. After synthesis in the root of the tea plant, L-theanine accumulates in the leaves, where sunlight converts L-theanine to polyphenols. Tea contains considerable amount of theanine (1.0%–2.5%) in dry weight of leaves and is the most common dietary source for L-theanine, while this compound can also be found in an inedible mushroom Boletus badius and Amazonian tree, Ilex guayusa.  It was discovered and isolated from green tea by Japanese scientists Sakato in 1949. Theanine exists in two isomeric forms ‘D’ and „L”. However, the ‘D’ form constitutes only 1.85% of total theanine. As the structure of L-theanine resembles that of L-glutamic acid, its mechanism of action may be potentially mediated through glutamate receptors. Research reported a complex range of neurochemical actions associated with L-theanine administration, including inhibiting glutamate reuptake, increasing brain GABA and striatum dopamine and glycine. Longer term L-theanine administration has demonstrated additional actions, including facilitating long-term potentiation and an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Theanine has influential effects on lifestyle associated diseases, such asdiabetes,  cardiovascular  disorders,  hypertension,  stress  relief,  tumor  suppression and liver injury. This amino acid can maintain normal sleep and improve memory function and nullify effect of the neurotoxins. L-theanine also induces relaxation through the enhancement of alpha wave activity in brain and can counteract the stimulatory effect of caffeine. L-theanine plays a beneficial role for improving performance on cognitively demanding tasks like word recognition, rapid visual information processing, critical flicker fusion threshold and attention switching. L-theanine supplementation also improves immune functions and protect against infections.
